Trip to Athens

Athens, a home of the Olympics, was the site for the 2008 Sport Accord, and IOC Executive Board meeting was held there to determine which cities can compete another 16 months to host the 2016 Olympic Games. My hometown Tokyo and three other cities, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid, have made the short list, and hereafter are they called "Candidate City."

I have just come back to Tokyo and saw a breaking news describing a quake hit Greece. The latest information tells at least one person was killed, and tens of people have been trapped. Can't believe I was in Athens and felt such a peaceful air 24 hours ago. I would like to extend my full sympathy to people and friends in Greece, and sincerely hope that they can bring back their normal life as soon as they could.

Every time I update on my blog, I feel how time goes by so fast and how lazy I am. A year has just passed since I came back to Tokyo after a torturous life in Syracuse. By now, I have been in the bid committee for seven months, and another exciting, possibly the most exciting 16 months in my life is about to begin.

Yesterday was the first holiday for the past four weeks. Having my flight at the late evening fortunately, I walked around the city of Athens to see sight seeing places where I was able to find ancient humans displaying their real strengths. In particular, Acropolis had an astonishing shape, standing at the top of a hill, at the heart of the city. You can feel why people want to establish such an iconic building some thousands years ago. Spiritual inspiration was there.

Monthly Update...

While this was supposed to be a daily blog, it is like monthly report these days... Almost a half year has passed since I landed this job. Many things happened to me, and every second gives me a lot of inspiration. Nothing is the same. Things are moving in and out. This is why, I like this job. No other job in the world can give me such excitement everyday.

One of my friends from college triathlon team got married last month. She is the most cheerful person in our team. Because of that reason, people like her, and lots of people got together to celebrate her. So, did I.

It was so much fun, and our team members and I were so happy to see her in a wedding dress. We wish her wonderful new life with her new family!!!

As implied, I finally got the first day off since last month yesterday. I have finally realized how much important taking a day off is... In the morning, a charity fun marathon was hosted by Make A Wish of Japan, gathering more than 1,000 runners and volunteers. It is an annual event, and I got the third place for the four consecutive years before I went to the States in 2006. While tried to claim the gold medal for this year, I could not get it... I sank in firth place for this time... Give me another shot in next year.

In the night, hanging out with my college friends, I went to a barbecue restaurant. Talking and eating more than three hours, we were stuffed with the broiled meet and pork. So satisfied!!! A long business trip has been scheduled, and my next holiday will be May 10. I do not knot if I can update my blog sometime before the holiday... Anyways, lots of milestones are in front of us. Wish me luck!!!

Happy Wedding & Good To See You

I didn't realize that another one month has already passed since last time I posted an entry. I would have to say again, "I'm still alive." Things are going well. Quite busy as always though. The only piece of my life where I am complaining is that I don't have much relaxing time even on weekends. When I found my scheduler indicating there is no holiday until April 19, I was shocked! haha.

While so, the recent two events were great and I was able to have good time with my old friends. There were two wedding parties last weekend and today. Both of them celebrated my friends from McCann so that lots of people from my former workplace got together and chat, chat, chat. It seemed like half of them are still in McCann, but the rest already left and doing great in other places, like I am doing. When I saw them, I felt like coming back to my home. I don't know how that atmosphere comes, but this spiritual feeling is the reason I still love this company.

Anyways, hectic fun life keeps on going. I'm having another wedding party next weekend. Having fun time from time to time, I will keep my best on the great job.

I'm Alive

Well, for those who might think that Masa's been died, I'm alive. "Hi again. How have you been?"

Sorry that I haven't updated my entries for more than a month. Things are going well, but just too many... Lots of things happened to me through the past few weeks. I don't know how many times I have said the same word since I landed this job, but once again, "This job is huge."

Ok, let me summarize this past few weeks. First of all, I was in NYC for just two nights in the very beginning of February on my way back from an international sports conference to Tokyo. It was a business trip, but was an amazing opportunity to see my friends from Newhouse. When I left Syracuse last October, I did not believe that I was able to come back to see my friends so soon. Having beers at a bar in the city, I saw Joe, Michele and HK, who are all great Newhousers building careers in NYC. We talked, drank, laughed. There were so much fun on the day. I thanked my business trip. haha.

Another great moment happened to me through the work for Tokyo Marathon held on February 17. I was assigned a task of accompanying a famous female marathoner Yuko Arimori, who claimed silver medal in Barcelona 1992 and bronze in Atlanta 1996. She is the athlete whom I respect, and she is also the reason I started running when I was 14 years old. As I saw the dead heat between Arimori and another famous Russian runner Valentina Egorova, I began to pursue a track athlete (which turned out to be a triathlete, by the way...) Her attitude toward sports and her words written in her books have always been driving my dreams.

I also have got a great news. One of my classmates has got a job at US Figure Skating. I am so happy to hear that two of us are now working within the Olympic Movement. As I sent out a message to her, she immediately wrote back to me. I am hoping to see her sometime soon at an international sporting conference or some other opportunities. If it comes true, there would be no such amazing things other than that. Let's see what happens in near future.

Let's Get A New Eyewear

Sunny Saturday. Usually my weekend is like, getting up around noon, jogging for an hour, having breakfast/lunch, cleaning up my room, doing laundry stuff, and such such such... These things get me my place until evening... This is how I am doing on the first day of weekend.

Today, I went to Shinjuku to get new glasses. I have two pairs; one of them has thick silver frame, yet too casual. The other one has no frame, and it's quite appropriate for business occasion. But, I've just got tired to wear the same glasses every day...

The new ones are Oakely, my favorite brand in eyewear category. When introduced my new glasses, people said "Masa, they don't fit you at all."

See how people react this time...

Let's Go To A Shrine On The New Year's Day

In Japan, new year holiday is more important than Christmas holiday. Most people, I mean 99% of the whole population, have a few days off allowing them to stay on the bed until afternoon. How nice holiday is... The sleepful holidays make people sloppy. So, Japanese productivity is extremely worse for the first few days after offices open in new year. haha. (Partly true story.)

During the new year holidays, most people, again 99% of Japanese, visit shrines to make wishes for the coming year. Not small number of famous shrines record millions of visitors annually. I went to a middle-size one located near my mother's house in the afternoon. There was a long waiting line required me twenty-five minutes to get a main building. God must have been busy to hear our demanding wishes... haha.

Happy New Year!!!

The Olympic year 2008 has begun!!! I wish you a great success and healthy life in this year!!!

Let's Look Back At the Year 2007

The year 2007 was one of the impressive years in my life. Let's look back at it from the beginning.

On January 1, I took a train from Syracuse to NYC in order to start job search. It was two-week trip, which allowed me to see a bunch of Newhouse alumni. I was also able to set a couple of interviews in the city. It was such an exciting journey. As you may remember, it was only six months after I landed in the States, and my English was awfully terrible. I can say, how brave I was, or what a bold man I was. haha. Those interviews did not go well, yet gave me a lot of inspirations to pursue my career in this field. I've learned a lot from the trip.

Soon after I returned to Syracuse, the spring semester began. On top of that I had to deal with four classes, I decided to have an English tutor, having three private sessions a week. Tons of homework assignments and the English sessions forced me to stick at the library. Someone said, the library is Masa's home. I couldn't deny it...

The spring semester went by so fast, like a lightning speed!!! As it turned to warm season, the graduation day was getting closer, which made me feel so sad... Every single second including the moment I was at class, I was dancing with my friends, I was dead on exams, was truly a treasure for me.

On May 12, I was in a black gown, sitting with my great classmates in the Carrier Dome. Yes, it was the Newhouse School convocation!!! I couldn't believe that the whole freaking busy life was almost finished. Each student was asked to step forward to a stage and given recognition. When I heard my name on the stage, at which all the Newhouse kids were starring, I was so proud of myself. haha. After the convocation, we hung out at Quad and took pictures and pictures. When I saw my professor smiling at me and saying "Congratulations," I couldn't hold back my tears.

It was a little strange that we still had to get a comprehensive exam done, even though we had the graduation ceremony. The three week capstone exam was extremely hard, and forced me to stick at a table in a dark room without any sleep... Most students developed more than 100 pages. So did I. When I finished it, there were only 15 minutes left. I was exhausted and swore never come back to school. haha. At lease, I made it.

On June 7, I retuned to Tokyo and soon moved to Osaka in order for my summer job at the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics Osaka 2007. It was first experience to live in outside Tokyo (inside Japan) and another first experience to work for the international sporting event. Life in Osaka was quite interesting, but I didn't have enough time to explore all the great portions. When I landed there, the championships was only 70 days away. Many tasks and tons of pressures suddenly came onto my shoulders. The world championships was literally huge. Those heavy tasks required me to commit a large number of hours on it, which has eventually become a precious experience for my future career.

I was going to look for a job in NYC. I actually went back to Syracuse in late September. But, just a day before I left Tokyo, I got a job interview at the Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee, where I am working now. It was a coincidence. The Olympic Games has been always my dream, and they have been looking for a guy who can handle international public relations for the bid. Soon after I was back in Syracuse, the organization officially offered me the job!!! I, then, traveled around Chicago and NYC to see Newhouse mates. I saw them starting their new life in the city, and they were doing great!!! One sad thing was, I didn't know when I could come back and see them again. I expect there will be a bunch of business trips to go around the world, but not quite sure if I can stop by NYC near future. I really miss you guys!!!

One day, I found Newhouse sent a diplomat to my mother's house. It looked like a junk mail, and I nearly threw it away... haha. But, it was a diplomat!!! This small piece of paper proves I am a master!!! (How much did I spend in order to get this paper?) It bought my mind back to where I was, why I went to Syracuse, and how hard life the past year was. At the same time, these things reminded me how much progress I have made for the year. Once again, how great year it was!!!

It's been two months since I started this new job. These days, I am quite comfortable to work in this organization, enjoying this huge responsibility. I love my job. I love what I am doing every day. I love my life. haha.

One year ago, I could not even think about getting a job in the bid committee. It was just a dream, yet has become a real. The whole way to be here was like an adventure!!! From Tokyo to Syracuse, NYC, Osaka, again Syracuse, and finally I am in Tokyo now. I can imagine it is not that simple to make the year 2008 more excited, but I want to do it. For making my journey more fantastic, every year in my life should be more excited than previous year. Yes, the great year 2008 is about to begin. I am looking forward to updating my stories on this blog in this coming year as well.

The End Of Year 2007

That I haven't updated this blog for three weeks proves how busy the past few weeks were. Everything is getting tough & condensed, though I am still enjoying this tons of pressures. Every time I write this blog, I can feel how time goes by so fast. Now, I am standing at the end of year 2007.

December 31, 1998. One of our college triathlon team's annual events began. A couple of my teammates accepted a call from me, and jogged between our college campus and a famous football park in Yokohama, which is about 27km trip. Since then, we have been doing the same event every year on December 31. Last year, I was out of town, and was in Syracuse. Two years ago, I wasn't able to participate in it because I had to work on my application for grads school. Therefore, I showed up today's event after a three-year absence finally.

It was such a nice day, and everybody enjoyed jogging for more than two hours and a half. It made me so tired, yet refreshed a lot. My brain, my muscle, my blood and every other cells inside me have been washed out. Now, I am so clean. haha.

Eight alumni and six current college athletes got together and had fun time, running all the way. I hope my job is not too busy at the end of 2008, allowing myself to join this event next year as well.

In the afternoon, it was almost the first time I could just easily relax after I flew back to Tokyo. I decided to buy some DVDs and do nothing but watch movies... I just needed such a time. "My Sasy Girl" is my favorite Korean love comedy. On my right hand, there was a Venti Caramel Macchiato. On my left hand, there was a chocolate-chip scone. How easy moment it was. haha. When this moment comes up again? Could be a year later...

Anyways, I enjoyed this day very much. The great year 2007 is now closing. Cheers for every moment I had. Now, I am looking forward to the new year opening. See what happens.

Let's Meet My Favorite Bartender

A friend sent me texts the other day, asking me out to some drinks. Sounds really nice to me. This past week was busy as usual, and I don't expect that the situation will turn out to be easier sometime soon. In such hectic days of life, I know what people need. Beers!!!

We hung at Shibuya. It was Sunday 1 a.m. haha. These two used to work for Athlete Café [S], where I often went to have beers and stuff before I went to America. They were always nice and cheerful to me. Even if I had big troubles on my job, they gave me lots of fun at that time. Also, they always encouraged me to pursue my dream in sporting field. We then became good friends.

They left the bar almost a year ago and started to pursue their own careers. This guy is looking for a place to open his own bar, while he is currently employed by a big Okinawa restaurant in Ebisu. When it opens, I will definitely try to become the first guest of the bar!!! The lady sitting next to him plans to leave Tokyo and will start new life in Fukuoka. Hmm... We're gonna miss her.

Lots of fun talks had me forget that I have to go to work on Sunday. It was 4:30 a.m. when we left. haha. I don't know when I can see them next, but I feel we can meet up from time to time for long.
